124 Montgomery Doesn't Exist
Luigi Mangione gave his mom a nonworking phone number and a fake address
Note: Please know I’m still working on the last of my three-part series on the Mangione timeline. The December timeline is the most challenging, for obvious reasons, especially when you’re committee to verifying everything and relying only on non-social media sources!
Just a quick post this evening to talk about one of the curiosities in the Mangione timeline and share some information I received from a super-sharp reader, George Ohwell (@georgeohwell23). Since I’ve started this Substack, George Ohwell has provided me with some really helpful fact checks when I’ve gotten something wrong or unclear, as well as great information.
As you might remember from The Whereabouts: Part Two (accessible below), Mangione gave his mother, Kathleen, a phone number and address for the San Francisco TrueCar office where he was, as he represented to her, working in July 20241.
We already know that phone number was “disconnected” and that TrueCar later told the media that it had closed its San Francisco offices. However, after publishing The Whereabouts: Part Two, George Ohwell messaged me to say they had doubts that the office address Mangione gave his mother—124 Montgomery Street—even exists. At the same time, I told them I’d reach out to TrueCar’s media relations folks to see if I could get confirmation. (I have not heard back.)
George Ohwell also unearthed information that showed TrueCar’s San Francisco office, which opened in 2015, was actually located at 140 New Montgomery Street. I was able to locate other sources for this information, so we can consider it fact that TrueCar’s San Francisco office was not located at 124 Montgomery but at 140 New Montgomery (New Montgomery replaced Montgomery Street South some years ago).
The press release linked above indicates that the offices at 140 New Montgomery were going to house the company’s engineering and data analytics teams, so it’s reasonable to conclude that he either worked out of 140 New Montgomery at some point or this was his office address, even if he were working remotely. Note that in July 2023, TrueCar laid off a huge portion of its workforce—24%.
Some news sources state that Mangione was part of these layoffs. Others are more circumspect and say he “stopped working” at TrueCar in 2023. Let’s assume he was laid off, as this seems likely, though we can’t confirm it until TrueCar responds to direct questions regarding this.
So in July 2023, when Mangione gave Kathleen the incorrect contact information, he knew he was not working for TrueCar. However, not only was the contact information incorrect, it was fake.
George Ohwell walked to “124 Montgomery Street” in San Francisco and can state categorically that no such address exists. Both George O. and I noted the similarity of this made up address to the made up address on Mangione’s fake ID: 128 Sherman Place. Similarly, no such address as 128 Sherman Place in Maplewood, NJ exists.
It’s not unusual to make up an address for a fake ID. It is, however, unusual to make up an office address to give to your mother when you know you no longer work at the company. And if we want to do some tinfoil origami hat-making, we could puzzle over the three-digits used for each address (124/128). Regardless, it’s somewhat suggestive of a pattern.
Of course, as George O. points out, it’s entirely possible that the reporting of “124 Montgomery Street” is the result of a typo on the missing persons report. But together with the disconnected number, it’s equally possible that Mangione made this address up out of whole cloth.
So much thanks to George Ohwell. This is why I love doing this Substack. Thank you so much for reading and for all the interesting tidbits readers have sent my way.
I won’t be linking to sources for already established events on the timeline here in this post, but you can find them in The Whereabouts Parts One and Two.
Indeed, Google maps shows the street number jumps from 120 to 130. Should we consider the possibility of a Harry Potter-esque 120 & 2/5 Montgomery Street?
