Great article. Horrendous what they are doing to LM and the defence team. The judge seemed like a total dick and I’ve seen some say on SM he is usually pro-prosecution. He seemed extremely biased. Any idea what supporters can do to help ensure he receives a fair trial?
Carro is a typical New York judge. Tough-sounding, no-nonsense, little patience. With her experience in the New York legal world, I have no doubt Agnifilo knows how to spar with him, and knows his judicial tendencies. I haven't seen anything yet that suggests he's biased--too early for that. But I'll certainly be watching his decisions in pre-trial hearings closely. Folks should be prepared for the New York vibes, though--what's harsh to some people are sweet nothings to New Yorkers lol.
There's nothing supporters can do to affect the outcome of the case, unless they're on the jury(!). However, supporting Mangione and his legal team and keeping the case on everyone's radar will increase the scrutiny of the state and fed's actions. This is one reason why Agnifilo decided to do a post-hearing press conference (but didn't after the first hearing).
Phew, So we just being sensitive 😅 I wish they will allow cameras. Some people that were in court said the judge seemed to disrespect the defense. Thanks for putting it into perspective.
Another worthwhile read, Ashley! Thank you for continuing to cover this. It's certainly going to be a long trial, huh?
I can't lie, that tweet screenshot gave me a giggle. If anything, the superfans are fuckin' funny. I'm definitely a supporter who dabbles in jokes + complimenting him, too, so I hope no one takes it personal when I say that some of them...are a bit embarrassing. You can definitely tell who came from a certain side of twitter. Unfortunate, but it's to be expected in a case this public and interesting. Their motives are more selfish than anything, so I consider them harmless. The media will continue to bash & paint him and all supporters in a negative light no matter what, so I don't pay much attention to the rabid minority. They're background noise to me at this point.
Will you be sharing your thoughts on the judge? I find him to be a bit biased. I'm trying to see if there's an official court transcript from yesterday's hearing, but I can't find one. I find that strange, given that these are public hearings.
Thank you so much for reading and for the kind words.
I am doing a little more background research on the judge before drawing any conclusions. I know the media keeps saying he's "tough on crime," but I've also seen a couple cases where he's offered a lighter sentence to defendants found guilty of pretty horrific crimes (a hit-and-run driver who killed a child). I know his tone struck a lot of folks observing yesterday as "harsh" but I didn't see anything concerning, just a typical New York judge vibe.
